Day 1: Marrakech - High Atlas - Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah - Ouarzazate - Dades Gorges

One of our team will meet you either at the airport or your accommodation, or at the agreed location. Our 6 day tour starts as we depart from Marrakech and drive towards the High Atlas Mountains. These are the highest in Morocco and home to many Berber families, as we cross them, you will see many small villages and farmlands. Tizi n´Tichka is the highest drivable pass in Morocco and at 2260 metres above sea level has impressive views. On the far side as we descend, you will see the traditional lifestyle of the locals. We will make a stop to visit the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou which is at the heart of the salt route which once served Timbuktu. Further on, we come to Ouarzazate; the cinema capital which has several studios. It also has some impressive kasbahs. On the far side, we pass the palm grove of Skoura and into desertified landscapes. Next stop is the Rose capital of Kelaat M´gouna where the fragrant Damascus roses are grown and harvested. We follow the rose valley to the Dades Valley; an important and fertile region producing figs and many vegetables. At the town of Boumalne, we drive up into the Dades Gorge where you will spend the first night.

Day 2: Dades Gorges - Todra Gorges - Merzouga Camel Trekking and Night in the Desert

In the morning, you will have a chance to see what makes this Gorge so impressive with photo opportunities. Back down to the valley and we continue through kasbah dotted towns and villages to Tinghir, from here we drive up to visit the Todra Gorge; a massive fault carved by the crystal waters of the river forming a 300 metre high gorge. Returning to Tinghir, we follow the road as it turns south passing palm groves of date palms and adobe villages as we make our way to the Sahara. In the afternoon we will arrive in Merzouga and the camels will be there ready for your sunset ride over the dunes. Once at the camp, the welcome mint tea is served and dinner prepared. Music around the campfire is played by locals and the stars are your companions.

Day 3: Explore Merzouga - Rissani and Night in the hotel

Today you will explore this special region with its hidden oases, nomadic families, mines, fossils, rock art and remote villages. We will also drive to Rissani with its colourful souk. This town is the last major town before the desert and a major trading centre. It also has a specialty called Medfouna, a pizza stuffed with meat, eggs and spices, quite delicious straight from the oven. We will also visit Khamlia, a village inhabited by descendants of Sudanese slaves that lived in the region working in the mines. They tell their stories through the Gnawa music that they play for visitors. In the afternoon, we return to Merzouga where you spend the night in a hotel with dinner and breakfast.

Day 4: Merzouga - Erfoud - Ziz Valley - Midelt - Azrou - Ifrane - Fes

Today we leave the desert behind and travel north to the fossil capital of Erfoud. Here they have workshops and museums dedicated to the fossils, minerals and dinosaur bones found in the region. Continuing north, we reach the Ziz Valley and its extensive palm groves and hidden kasbahs. Vast landscapes of nomadic pasturelands, rivers, lakes and mountains fill the vistas as we reach the apple capital of Midelt for a lunch break. As the forests of Azrou come into view, you will also see nomadic families living in tents and handmade structures, tending their animals. In the giant cedar forests, Barbary apes live in the trees and can be seen as we pass through. In the town of Ifrane, you will be surprised by the alpine architecture and sloping rooves. As the scenery opens out we descend to the city of Fes where you will spend the night.
