Our driver guide will meet you in Casablanca airport and you will start your 10 day Morocco tour. If your arrival is early enough, we can start with a tour of the Hassan II Mosque, this is one of only two mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims may enter, and it is stunning. Next stop is Rabat; the capital city of Morocco, as we have a long drive it will be a short visit. Chefchaouen; the Blue city is hidden away in the Rif Mountains and will be the first nights’ accommodation location.
After breakfast, you have the morning free of your 10-days Morocco Trip to explore this amazing blue medina with its narrow streets, blue painted doors, walls and stairways. There are some hidden artisan workshops too where the woven blankets are made. Chefchaouen is a photographer's dream and it's easy to see why. After lunch, we will depart and drive through lush woodland following the river. We will make a stop to visit the Roman ruins at Volubilis; this 2nd century archaeological site is well worth seeing with its triumphal arch, mosaics and vast artefacts. We continue our journey to reach the mediaeval medina of Fes where you will be staying in a traditional riad.
Your local Fes Guide will come to your riad in the morning to meet you and explain the program for the day. Partly a driven and mostly a walking tour will take you to see important places and panoramic sights, artisan workshops and the souks of the ancient medina. Each neighbourhood traditionally had a mosque, a fountain, a bakery, hammam, and school. There are some still in wonderful condition that you can visit. You will find the artisan visits very interesting and it gives a great insight into the work undertaken and ancient traditions still used to make the wonderful goods you see for sale in the souks. This of course includes a visit to the tanneries as Morocco is known for its leather goods. In the late afternoon, you return to your riad.
We leave Fes after breakfast and start our journey of 10 days Morocco Itinerary to reach the Sahara desert. The great cedar forests, home to the Barbary Monkeys will be our first stop so you can see these indigenous wild animals. This region is called Little Switzerland because of its alpine architecture and in winter with the snow, it is very picturesque. We travel south and in Midelt we have a lunch break. The scenery changes drastically from forests to mountains, palm groves and gorges and always the river flowing south. Erfoud is the mineral and fossil capital as the region is rich in these finds, there are museums and workshops making them into beautiful and functional items for the home. You will start to see the signs of the desert and the outline of the dunes will appear as we near the town of Merzouga, where you will be staying in a traditional hotel.
Today is the big adventure in the desert. We will use 4x4 vehicles as we can go off-road for a better experience and more fun. We will discover hidden oases, nomads perhaps, enjoy a Gnawa music performance by the Sudanese descendants of slaves who live in a small village called Khamlia, take a trip to Rissani with its colourful souk and try the local delicacy called Medfouna which is a Berber Pizza. In the afternoon, it is time to prepare for the night in the desert. Camels will carry you across the dunes and into the sunset, arriving at your nomadic or luxuy camp for dinner. Under the blanket of stars, you can sit around the campfire while the locals play music and sing songs for you.
If you would like to watch as the sun rises over the dunes, one of the camp teams can wake you. It is a beautiful time when the new dawn arrives. You will return to the hotel on the camels and have breakfast; showers are also available if you would like to freshen up. We depart then and continue our 10 days Morocco Desert tour. Today you will be visiting some more amazing places that nature has created for us to discover. Todra Gorge is a 300 metre gorge carved by the waters of the river, a magical place and a favourite of international rock climbers looking for a new route. We travel along the Dades Valley and up into the gorge where we spend the night in a Riad or Hotel.
After breakfast, we depart and take you to see the unique rock formations called the fat monkey fingers. There are also many kasbahs in this region, some are still lived in and many are in decline. Returning to the valley below, you will notice many more kasbahs hidden amongst the fields of fruits and crops. We drive through the Rose Valley too where all the fields are rimmed with pretty pink roses, these are harvested and processed into beauty and culinary products. At the end of this valley, the landscape changes again and the vast desertified scenery surrounds you with distant views of the snow covered peaks. This is also where the largest solar plant is located off to your right. We pass the palm grove of koura and through the cinema capital of Ouarzazate. We will take a detour to visit the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou, a fortress town still inhabited by a few Berber families. We will have lunch here and you can walk around the streets of the Ksar. We will then continue our journey crossing over the High Atlas Mountains and down to the plains of Marrakech. Here you will spend the night in a traditional riad in the 1000 year old medina.
After breakfast your Local City Guide will arrive to start your walking tour of this colourful, ancient and historic medina. Marrakech has palaces, museums and quranic schools, it has mosques, bakeries, fountains and hammams in each neighbourhood, there are also many gardens as well as the souks and of course the Jemaa el Fna square. So there is plenty to see and explore. In the afternoon, you are free to explore and perhaps do some shopping.
Today, we change the air and take a day trip to the coastal medina of Essaouira with its extensive beach and surf waves. Here shopping is laid back and gentle. Wander the streets and see some locally made crafts, visit the many galleries, wander along the promenade and visit the fishing port. If you enjoy fish and seafood, the restaurants are plentiful; you can choose your fish and have it cooked to order. This is also a place of music and in years past slaves arriving into this port brought the Gnawa music. Annually there is a world music festival that draws an international following in the evening you will be back in Marrakech.
Today you have the airport transfer back to Casablanca and end of our 10 Day Morocco Tour itinerary.
