Welcome with the Marrakech Desert Excursions team to experience the authentic and real Morocco as much as we do.
One of our team will meet you at the airport or your accommodation in Marrakech where you will be staying for the next three nights.
After breakfast, your guide will come to your accommodation and you will start your walking tour of the important and notable sites around Medina. The 19th century Palace of Bahia, the Koutoubia Mosque, Saadian Tombs are popular, there is also the Badi Palace and some very interesting museums.
We can include an afternoon tour to the Majorelle Gardens and Berber Museum and other locations in the new city. The souks and Jemaa el Fna square are also included. Overnight in the medina.
Today you will travel deep into the heart of the High Atlas region where many valleys and villages are hidden amongst these mountains.
The Ourika Valley is a fertile green valley with crystal clear waters running from the mountains. Here you will discover the culture and traditions of the Amazigh or Berber people. In the afternoon you will return to your medina accommodation.
Leaving the Red City, we take the road for the market town of Asni and through the red clay landscapes to Ouirgane. Following the Nfis River we travel through ancient Berber villages to the cradle of the Almohad Dynasty where we stop to visit the 12th century mosque at Tinmal before continuing through Ijoukak and on to the pass at Tizi n´Test. Below, the landscape levels out as we descend to reach the town of Taroudant.
Today after breakfast, we will explore this walled medina in the Anti Atlas mountain region high above the Atlantic seaboard. It has the nickname of Little Marrakech and you will find interesting Berber jewellery shops in the souks. Overnight in Medina.
This region is the main Argan growing region and much of it has been designated a National Park to help preserve this tree with its precious produce.
Moroccan Gold is often the name given to Argan Oil which is extracted by hand from the nuts of the Argan tree.
You can stop at one of the cooperatives to learn about the processes and taste the products. We journey south to reach the almond capital of Tafraout deep in the Anti Atlas Mountains where you will stay for the next 2 nights.
Today will be a relaxing day exploring this town and surrounding landscapes. It has unusual rock formations that have been painted by a Belgian artist.
In the spring, the aroma of the almond blossom fills the air and the bees come to drink the nectar.
Shopping is very relaxed and Tafraout artisans make some very attractive shoes. Overnight in Tafraout.
After breakfast, we will depart for Tata. In this vast and remote landscape, you will see nomadic Berber people with their flocks of goats and sheep, their tents close to water sources.
This journey can only be done in a 4x4 and from here on you will see why. These are desertified regions with mountains and rocky deserts. In the evening you will arrive in Tata where we spend the night.
You are deep in the south of Morocco now and this region is a mixture of mountains, rocky deserts, dry rivers and lakes and dunes.
You will see all of this today as we journey to reach the high dunes of Chegaga where you will spend the night in a desert camp.
This region is home to many Amazigh families and you may notice different dialects. Music is at the core of Amazigh culture and you will have a live performance around the campfire after your dinner.
Last night you may have experienced a desert sunset, the best time however, is the sunrise. You will be woken in time to get up and welcome the new day. We take the off road trails across the desert to reach Mhamid; the last town before the Sahara.
We follow the Draa valley as it winds its way through palm groves and adobe villages once heavily populated. In Tamegroute, we make a stop to visit the pottery workshops with their unique green glazed ceramics and the Qur'anic library.
You will notice many kasbahs along this valley and in Zagora there is an old ksar with many more hidden in its walls. In Zagora we stop for the night.
After breakfast, we leave Zagora and continue along the Draa Valley to reach Ouarzazate; the cinema capital of Morocco. There are several film studios and sets there.
Taking a diversion after Ouarzazate, we stop to visit the ksar of Ait Benhaddou; location of many blockbuster movies like The Gladiator, Prince of Persia and Kingdom of Heaven. Martin Scorsese is very fond of this location for his movies.
Continuing along the Ounila Valley, we stop to visit the amazing Telouet Kasbah before crossing the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka pass and descending through numerous Berber villages to reach Marrakech in the evening.
